On Library 2.0 and Web 2.0 - #15

My head is swimming! I read several of the posts related to Library 2.0 from the list of Discovery Resources.

What does Library 2.0 mean to me? Here are a few thoughts ...

• Library 2.0 means being user-centric. Library users must be the #1 priority in planning and implementing library services.

• Change is constant. It is imperative that those of us who work in libraries keep an eye on the future and appropriately change the ways we deliver information and services.

• Librarians must be aware of "semantic noise." We already lose people when we use terms like LCSH and authority files and boolean operator. Using 2.0 jargon when we communicate with users could simply add to the confusion! In order to easily use the library, users must be able to understand what we are saying and what we are doing. For example, we could add rollyos to the BSC Library Web site, but if the label said "Cool Rollyos," would they be used? Does "rollyo" mean anything to our users? Implementing 2.0 technologies and using 2.0 terms without somehow also defining those terms for our target audience could be a waste of time and effort.

• Library 2.0 is fun!

• The future of libraries is exciting! Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 are just the beginning. I especially liked Dr. Wendy Schultz's perspective on the library of the future in her piece on the library experience of the future.

• Library 4.0 is my kind of place!
