A horse has been grazing in the library since 2004. What's up with that?
In 2004, "Catch a Painted Pony," a community art and fundraising project modeled after Chicago's "Cows on Parade" or Seattle's "Pigs," sought 21 artists from throughout the region to creatively embellish 21 life-size fiberglass horses. The horses were then displayed throughout the Minot area during the summer and auctioned off at a gala event on September 25, 2004. Proceeds were given to Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. to establish an endowment fund for its programs and services.
The library horse was painted by Michelle Lindblom and Brian Hushagen, BSC art faculty members. The artists named their creation "Divided in Space and Time." Here is their statement about their collaboration:
"With our unique painting styles, we felt the end result of dividing the horse would reflect our personalities in a fairly dynamic and diverse manner. Michelle's intent was to visualize the beauty of the North Dakota landscape. Texturing the horse and adding vibrant layered hues replicates what she sees and feels living in North Dakota. On the verso, the intense image of blue horses was Brian's reference to Franz Marc's "Big Blue Horses," in an edgier, more masculine context."
When you stop by the library, be sure to look at both sides of the horse. The side you can see in this photo was painted by Brian Hushagen.
